Carlebach Nusach™ Training

Preserving the Pure Tradition of the Prayer Melodies, Niggun, composed by Reb Shlomo

Taught by his students who learned to lead prayer services at Reb Shlomo’s side.

Classes in Jerusalem, Moshav Modiim, New York, San Francisco & Online

“Elie Wiesel introduced Reb Shlomo to his students by describing him as a Baal Shem Tov-like figure of our generation.”      Rabbi Samuel Intrator

“Shlomo, you didn’t write these niggunim. They are from the Bais HaMikdash (Holy Temple).”        Rabbi Avraham Twersky

“ A niggun is the key to someone’s heart.” Reb Shlomo

Reb Shlomo will go down in Jewish history as the teacher who taught the Jewish people to fulfil the commandment, “Thou shall love the Lord thy G-d with all your heart”.  That is why he can be compared to the Baal Shem Tov. His melodies seem to be imprinted in the souls of Jews of every denomination, so we can say with Rabbi Twersky that Shlomo’s melodies were truly a gift from above.

We must preserve his niggunim, and how they are used in prayer services as he composed them.  Reb Shlomo always said, “Give me harmony”, and we want to teach the basic melodies and prayers so perfect harmony can be made.

We would not dream of altering one letter of the Torah scroll, because they are the letters and words received at Mt. Sinai. We have no right, and in fact, we are forbidden. In the same way, we must preserve the precious prayer melodies, the niggunim received by Reb Shlomo from the realm of the Beit HaMikdash.  These melodies have the power to open the heart in an instant to feel love for HaShem, and these niggumim must be protected from alteration and debasement.

 This is our mission.

THE THIRTEENTH GATE

Jewish legend tells us there are twelve gates through which the prayers of Jews enter heaven, each gate corresponding to one of the twelve tribes.  Each tribe had its own Nusach, which was the order and melody of the prayers they offered.  But out of HaShem’s thireteenth attibute of mercy, another gate was opened through which the prayer of any and all Jews could ascend to Heaven.  In the beginning of Lurianic Kabbalah, this thirteenth gate was understood the nusach of the Arizal  of Tfazt.

It is becoming obvious that the thirteenth gate has expanded and is filled with Shlomo’s Nusach.  All over the world, from Reform to Reconstructionist to Renewal to Conservative, from Orthodox to Ultra-ordothox to Haredi, black hat and fur hat, the melodies that are constantly used in prayer are those composed by Rebi Shlomo.

Those who sing these melodies often have no idea where they came from. Many imagine they are Jewish folk tunes. But in fact they were brought down from inspiration above by Reb Sholmo.  His melodies unify the Jewish people as nothing has ever done before.  Differences fade as the holy notes open hearts and fill them with love for HaShem, making it possible to fulfil the commandment to Love HaShem with all the heart.  Watch any congregation when a few notes of a Shlomo niggun begin, and one can see eyes light up with sparks of holiness.

Reb Shlomo continued the work of the Ari and the Baal Shem Tov, opening the 13th gate wider and wider so all could enter, not just the scholars or the pious.  All can enter, and all do.  Now we must be sure that gate is preserved as it was constructed.  We must protect the mesorah, the tradition of exactly how Reb Shlomo sang his nigguns, and how he used them in prayer services, from Shacharit to Mincha to Aravit, as well as Hallel and the Holy Days.  This is the work of the Shlomo Nusach Training.

Beautifying the Mitzvah and Connecting Reb Shlomo’s Minyanim

Reb Shomo’s  melodies have spontaneously permeated every aspect of Jewish life and prayer.  And to make these melodies even more beautiful we want to create a teaching tradition that accurately transmits the original music Reb Shlomo composed.

And while Reb Shlomo would be pleased to see how his music has become a part of Jewish tradition, he would be even more pleased to see the  Shlomo communities connecting with each other around the world.  Shlomo’s Tent plans to do that by empowering all Shlomo minyans around the world with publicity, training of new prayer leaders, and an annual conference
